How to Test Respirators
- 1). Put the respirator on according to the given instructions. Each respirator is slightly different, but most are placed over your nose and mouth and have a strap that goes around your head. The type of strap and the mask differs depending on the type of respirator.
- 2). Assess the respirator for comfort. Ensure there is room for eye protection, enough space to talk and that the mask covers your face and cheeks.
- 3). Assess the fit. Though comfort is important, the fit is vital. A respirator should not slip nor feel tight. The strap should hold it in place without putting too much pressure on your head. Your chin should fit properly into the chin space without too much pressure on your nose and cheeks.
- 4). Test the seal. The seal should provide the appropriate positive and negative pressure according to the specific respirator. Move your head side to side and up and down to check that the seal does not break when moving. The respirator should seal along your face so there is no air coming from beneath or above the respirator.
- 5). Take a few deep breaths. Check the breathing quality. Any time there are problems breathing while testing the respirator, see a doctor for a health check-up. The test should not cause breathing problems.
