How to Get Pet Smells Out of Carpet & Furniture
- 1). Clean up any accidents immediately. For example, if your puppy urinated on the floor, soak it up by covering the accident with a thick layer of paper towels. Then place a layer of newspapers on top of the paper towels. Allow the papers to soak up as much as possible.
- 2). Apply new, dry paper towels and newspapers. Repeat until you've soaked up as much as possible. Do not rub the area, as this will only push the stain deeper into the fiber and cause the odor to linger. Lightly dab the area instead.
- 3). Rinse the carpet or furniture with clean, cold water. Soak up the cold water using paper towels and newspapers, lightly dabbing. If you have a wet-vac or shop-vac handy, use it to suck up the water. Never use hot water or steam cleaner, which can cause the odors to set in the fibers of the carpet or furniture. Also, do not use any chemical cleaning agents, as they may only temporarily mask the odors.
- 4). Sprinkle some baking soda on the spot and let it sit for about ten minutes. Then vacuum the carpet or furniture. You can also use a pet odor neutralizer.
- 1). Use a wet-vac or shop-vac for old, set-in odors. If you don't have one, they are easily rented or purchased at most hardware stores. If using a wet-vac, simply follow the directions on the machine for the best results. Also, use only clean, cold water. Do not add any chemicals.
If using a shop-vac, apply cold water to the affected area. Allow it to soak for a minute and then vacuum it completely. Repeat until the area is visibly clean, or as close as possible. - 2). Spray the carpet or furniture with a pet odor neutralizer. Pet odor neutralizers can be found at any pet store and work to work to break down the enzymes which cause odors to linger. Follow the directions on the bottle for the best results.
- 3). Apply carpet stain cleaner only after you've dealt with the odor. The stain cleaner will remove the discoloration on the carpet or upholstery. Once again, for the best results use the cleaner according to the directions on the bottle.
