How to Photograph Running Water

    • 1). Read your camera's owner’s manual to help you set your camera in manual mode as well as how to adjust the shutter speed. This function varies from camera to camera.

    • 2

Stop the water’s motion and freeze it in place by using a very fast shutter speed. Typically something above 1/200th of a second will give you a better chance at the results you desire.

    • 3

Create a soft blur of the water with a longer exposure. You are attempting to capture the movement of the water, which will cause it to blur and appear soft or mystical. To do so you will need a longer exposure time: 1/30th of a second or slower. You may want to use a tripod to steady the camera.

    • 4). Practice with your camera in your kitchen using the faucet and running water.
