What Happens to Erroneous Deposits?

    Contact the Bank

    • If you notice that there is an erroneous deposit on your account, you should immediately contact your bank. Even though it is not your fault, the quicker the error is corrected, the less likely you are to spend the money that is not yours. Some say that you do not need to contact the bank because they will find the error on their own; however, contacting the bank yourself will mean the error could be cleared up quicker as well as reduce the chance that you will suffer any consequences from the error.

    Bank Audit

    • Banks often perform audits to try to identify errors made by employees and possibly the computer system. If there are funds which are erroneously deposited into your account, the bank is likely to find the error on its own the next time it performs an audit. If there is any question about the deposit, your bank may contact you to help determine if it is an error or not.

    Refund

    • After a bank has determined that a deposit has been made into your account in error, the error will be rectified. The bank will make a withdrawal from your account equal to the error, which could be a full deposit or just part of that deposit. Even if you have spent some of the money on purpose or by accident, the full amount will be withdrawn, even if that means overdrawing your account. It is up to you to make sure you do not overspend because of an erroneous deposit.

    Request Refunds

    • If your account is on the withdrawing end of an erroneous deposit, your bank will need to request the money back from the bank to which it was paid. If you notice that money has gone out of your account that you did not authorize, it is important to contact your bank immediately. Your bank will process the request and do all of the paperwork to get your money back. This can take time, however, so you must watch your account carefully until the error is rectified.
