How to Care for Comforters
- 1). Make your bed daily and lay the comforter flat over the top of the made bed. This spreads out the comforter so it can air out each day.
- 2). Locate the fabric care label on the comforter. Comforters with removable covers may have two labels – one on the comforter and the other on the cover.
- 3). Remove the cover once weekly, if applicable. Wash the cover with the rest of your bedding following the care instructions on the label. Most cotton and synthetic covers are machine washable on the permanent press setting.
- 4). Wash comforters with no removable cover once monthly if the care label indicates machine washing is a suitable cleaning. Wash the comforter on the cycle indicated on the label. Tumble dry on a medium-heat setting until the batting is completely dried within.
- 5). Air down comforters and other materials that aren't machine washable monthly. Hang the comforter on a line outdoors on a sunny day for four to six hours. The sunlight bleaches out light stains and kills any odor-causing bacteria in the bedding.
- 6). Store comforters in a breathable linen storage bag. Use a bag large enough to hold the folded comforter loosely, as compressing the comforter during storage can ruin the loft so it isn't as fluffy the next time you use it.
