Syria – a Popular Destination for the 21st Century

Syria not only rates as one of the most popular destinations in the Middle East, it also offers great value for travelers. In this land of a thousand and one nights, you'll experience the fairy tales of Scheherazade in person while visiting castles, shopping at exotic bazaars and marveling in the most incredible historic scenery.

When you visit Syria, you'll be amazed by the wonders of its ancient city of Damascus, filled with souks selling colorful carpets. This city boasts a rich past going as far back as 2,500 years BC. You'll be blown away by displays of some of the most amazing architecture in the world. Its surrounding Roman wall has been rebuilt and houses the ruins of the Temple of Jupiter built in the third century; there, you'll also see the Umayyad Mosque, built in 705 AD. Its landscaped surroundings hold the mausoleum for Saladin, a legend in Middle Eastern history.

Continue on your tour to Aleppo, the second biggest city in the country. Its environment is reminiscent of a charming European town, with inns, museums and cafes. You won't want to miss the Basilica of St. Simeon, the largest Christian edification in the Middle East during the fourth century. Its souqs date to the late 1200s and reflect the influence of the Ottoman Empire. It's here where you'll want to bargain for souvenirs, jewelry and rugs. If you've always dreamed of living in a castle, head out to the citadel where you can live out your fantasy as you explore the grounds, and enjoy the magnificent views afforded from the top.

Should you wish to extend your journey, there are many interesting sections of Syria you don't want to miss. Or you may add a trip to the neighboring Israel where you can experience the beauty and majesty of historic, religious and cultural landmarks. Consider one of the holyland tours to ensure you cover all the important spots this country offers.

However, if you decide to stay in Syria for the remainder of the excursion, inquire about the different trips out to Bosra. Its array of mosques built around an oasis, are something to marvel on. And of course, you'll want to include the amazing Crac de Chevaliers, the castle portrayed in the Hollywood classic, Lawrence of Arabia.

Don't wait. Syria is not just a destination; it's a trip back in history.
