How to Calculate the Ad Valorem Tax for Georgia Vehicles
- 1). Obtain a copy of the Motor Vehicle Ad Valorem Tax Assessment Manual. This manual is provided by the Department of Revenue to allow residents to understand the state procedures and requirements. Use the link in References or call the Department of Revenue at 877-423-6711.
- 2). Find the Valuation Identification number (VID, not VIN) for your make and model of vehicle to find the current value of your vehicle.
- 3). Find the millage rate and ad valorem tax rate for the county in which your vehicle is located by calling your county tag office or visit the website in Resources.
- 4). Multiply the value of the car as stated in the manual by the millage rate and the ad valorem tax rate that you find.
- 1). Use the Motor Vehicle Assessment Manual to find your vehicle OBS (Original Bill of Sale) value. This is used for recreational vehicles, buses, motorcycles, commercial trucks, pre-1981 cars and trucks, handmade trailers and antique vehicles. Find the depreciation percentage for your particular type of vehicle.
- 2). Divide the original value of your vehicle by the depreciation percentage listed in the manual.
- 3). Multiply the result of the above calculations by the millage rate and ad valorem tax rate for your county and district.
