How to Get Rid of Termites Under the House Shingles

    • 1). Climb on the house roof and inspect the area under the shingles the termites have attacked. Use a roofer's shovel to lift up and inspect underneath asbestos shingles. Use a shingle ripper on wood shingles to cut the nails holding them in place. Besides looking for actual termites, watch for fecal pellets, sawdust, small holes and "chewed" wood--positive signs of termite infestation. Lift up and check the wood beneath the underlayment, too.

    • 2). Wear long sleeves and pants, rubber gloves, safety goggles and an air mask to protect yourself. Use a chemical product like Spectracide Terminate Termite & Carpenter Ant Killer, available at Lowe's. Read and follow the manufacturer's directions. Mix the chemical and spray the area that's affected by termites.

    • 3). Rip off all the shingles and the underlayment after the termites are dead. Replace any damaged wood beneath the underlayment. Using pressure-treated wood to replace the damaged roof will help protect it against future termite infestation.

    • 4). Install new underlayment and shingles on the affected area of the roof.
