How to Fix Black Mold
- 1). Purchase a dehumidifier unit from your local home supply store.
- 2). Run the dehumidifier unit to start drying out your home. This works by sucking the moisture out of the air. Follow the instructions provided with the unit. Remember to empty the collection vessel of water regularly to prevent mold from forming inside it.
- 3). Fix any water leaks around your home to prevent the growth of further mold.
- 4). Put on your rubber gloves and mix a solution of 1 part chlorine bleach with 10 parts water.
- 5). Transfer your bleach-water solution into your spray bottle and apply it liberally to the black mold.
- 6). Leave the solution for at least 10 minutes, then scrub the surface until it is clear of mold. Use sponges or scrubbers, depending on the surface and the extent of the mold. Make sure you keep the solution away from carpets; if you are treating baseboards, you may want to lay down a plastic sheet to protect your floor.
- 7). Dispose of the rubber gloves, sponges and scrubbers you used to remove the black mold, as these will be contaminated.
- 8). Get rid of household carpeting, upholstery and furniture that has black mold. It is highly unlikely that you will be able to completely remove the mold spores from these items.
