How to Camp Near Bloomington, Minnesota

    • 1). Choose your campground option. In the Bloomington area there are chain campgrounds that offer sites for RV campers and tenters. Sites include water and electric and sewer hookups, with many of them offering TV and Internet service as well. Ask the camp host what the rules are regarding bringing outside firewood to the campground. Minnesota is trying to prevent infestations of non-native insects that damage forests and trees. Bring a leash for your pets, as most campgrounds require four-legged guests to be leashed during the stay.

    • 2). Pack insect repellent for summer months. Minnesota has large mosquito and black-fly populations during the warm months and if there is no wind they are maddening. If you are especially sensitive bring insect head-nets and long-sleeved shirts.

    • 3). Bring clothing for the season. Bloomington temperatures average from 48 degrees Fahrenheit at night to 85 degrees during the day between May and early September. Autumn temps fall between 39 and 60 degrees. Avoid wearing cotton when there is rain; instead, go with synthetic or wool layers.

    • 4). Find groceries, camping supplies and sundries in the Twin Cities area. The region has many outdoor outfitters, canoe companies and camping outlets where supplies are easily obtained.

    • 5). Find hiking and wildlife watching opportunities within the urban areas near Bloomington at the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. No camping takes place in the refuge but it is near Bloomington. The refuge is at 3815 American Blvd. East, Bloomington, MN 55425.
