Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER)

No, we're not talking about a person who possesses the uncanny ability to see the future, or that lightweight, summery fabric used for seersucker suits. But SEER may help keep you cool. SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, is a performance standard for air conditioners set forth by the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute.

SEER is measured by output in BTUs (British Thermal Units) through the duration of the typical cooling season, or around 1,000 hours, divided by its energy use in watt-hours.

SEER = BTU/w-h

All residential air conditioners sold in the US must have a SEER rating of at least 13, as required by the US Department of Energy. To qualify under the ENERGY STAR program, an air conditioner must be rated SEER 14 or higher. Residential air conditioners are available up to a rating of SEER 26. The higher the rating, the more efficient the unit, and the more expensive it will cost. But remember, energy efficiency eventually pays for itself.
