Information on Art Grants for Individuals

    Local Funding

    • Grantmakers in your local community are your best option for getting funded. For example, the Indianapolis Art Council provides creative renewal grants. Creative renewal grants fund retreats, where artists often find inspiration. In New York State, the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council provides up to $2,500 for specific art projects.

    State Funders

    • Almost every state in the U.S. has a state arts commission or state arts council that offers grants to individual artists. A list of state arts organizations has been compiled by the Cranbrook Academy of Art Library in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. A link is provided in the References section below.

    National Funders

    • There are grantmakers who offer grants to artists in every state. Lists compiled by the Cranbrook Academy of Art Library and the Michigan State University Libraries (see links in References) provide several such funders. One example is the Pollack-Krasner Foundation, which was established by the late artist, Lee Krasner, wife of artist Jackson Pollack. Grant amounts are determined by the individual circumstances of each artist who applies. For information on the restrictions on eligibility and use of funds see the website http://www.pkf.org/grant.html

    Other Grantmakers

    • Other grants can be found through the Foundation Center, a national philanthropic organization headquartered in New York, with four regional field offices. The Foundation Center maintains a comprehensive database of grantmakers, accessible through most public libraries. It also provides a guide on how to find and apply for grants to the funders on its lists.

    Newsletters

    • To make certain you are aware of all the opportunities that come up, subscribe to every arts funding newsletter you can find. One is the Art List at http://www.theartlist.com. Many local and state arts organizations also send out newsletters listing upcoming funding opportunities.
