How to Remove Foreclosures From Credit

    • 1). Get copies of all three of your credit reports. Get the reports from the site Annual Credit Report (see Resources), which offers free reports from TransUnion, Equifax and Experian, the three nationwide credit bureaus. The federal Fair Credit Reporting Act entitles you to three free reports every 12 months, including one from each of the credit bureaus. Annual Credit Report is the only website authorized by the Federal Trade Commission to offer the free reports.

    • 2). Find foreclosures on your credit reports that are inaccurate or outdated. A mistake by the credit bureaus may have resulted in someone else's foreclosure being listed on your report. By law the credit bureaus must remove the inaccurate information once you challenge it. Also look for foreclosure entries that have been listed on your report for more than seven years. Legally, the information becomes invalid after having been listed for seven years and must be removed if you challenge it.

    • 3). Write letters to the credit bureaus challenging the foreclosures based on the information being outdated or inaccurate. Send your letters to the credit bureaus at their addresses listed on the respective credit reports. Wait 30 days for answers.
