A Guide to Bangkok’s Famous Night Markets
There is a reason that the term €retail therapy' has become so popular. For some unexplainable reason, the act of purchasing merchandise, whether it is an article of clothing or a tiny trinket such as a keychain or refrigerator magnet, it is just so relaxing and therapeutic. Isn't that the feeling everyone is after when they book a vacation? People plan such trips to relax and unwind. Bangkok, Thailand is the ideal place to go when you want to get away from it all. Aside from the beautiful and friendly locals, the shopping there is second to none. Although Bangkok is home to one of the most extravagant shopping malls in the world, they are also very well-known for their bustling markets.
Shoppers love Bangkok because there are shops almost everywhere you go. There are vendors scattered across all the streets selling everything from pirated DVD's to knock-off Gucci bags. Avid shoppers also enjoy the fact that there are a number of night markets that they can pay a visit to once the shopping centers have closed for the day.
The most popular is Patpong night market. Located in Silom, this night market is filled with souvenir t-shirts, designer replicas and other goods. This differs from other night markets because there are Go-Go bars encompassing the shopping area making this a one of a kind experience. Be wary however of the quality and authenticity of the goods that are being sold at this particular market. The chances of purchasing a genuine Louis Vuitton wallet at this place is about as slim as finding $100 bill on the sidewalk.
For those that do not mind sporting second hand items, check out the Ratchada night bazaar. This night market was initially a showroom of sorts for used Vespas and assorted car parts. Today it has become extremely popular for having used clothing, shoes, purses, furniture, antiques, decorations and other items for sale at prices you would not believe. So, if you are looking for something unique and ridiculously priced, this is the place to go.
If you find yourself in the vicinity of the Memorial Bridge, you might as well make your way to the Saphan Phut night market. Open until midnight, there are tons of good deals waiting to be found. Just like the other bazaars, prices are very cheap, but it never hurts to ask for a discount. There are also a ton of food stalls to keep your stomach happy while you shop the night away.
