The Life of a Ground Mole

Moles are not social mammals and do not like other moles around them. You will find one mole living in a tunnel by itself and if it learns that there is another mole within the vicinity, it will move to some other place. Moles only come together during mating season, which is usually between February and June. Once they are done with mating the male will leave the female alone. The females don't even stay there to raise the young ones.

The young ones are born in April and May. The young ones are born in a litter of between four and seven in a large mole hole called a fortress. When the young ones are two weeks old they have fur and can open their eyes. However moles are blind and cannot see. When the young moles are around five weeks old they leave the mothers tunnel, go out to the surface and make tunnels of their own. At this point the young moles are in danger. They can easily lose their lives because they are not experienced and may not know who the enemy is. They are easy prey for other animals.

Moles feed on creatures that dwell in the soil like earthworms, slugs, beetle larvae and other small vertebrates that move around in the ground. It is right to say that the moles are insectivorous. Moles have a very good sense of smell and hearing which makes up for their poor eyesight. The moles have sensitive whiskers which help them find their way around and can also sense when there is a foreigner within its vicinity.

They also have tiny hairs around their long nose. They are therefore able to tell when an insect is near them and are able to find it and feed on it. Moles eat a lot and in a single day can eat an average of over half of their weight. Therefore when the insects are plenty, the moles store them. They bite the heads off the insects and store them in a large mole hole. This happens especially during autumn and winter.

The fur on the moles bodies is in such a way that is smooth and velvety; this makes it easy for the mole to move into the tunnels. When the mole senses danger while in the tunnel it can easily go back at the same speed it goes forward in the tunnel. The tunnels and burrows made by the moles are very narrow so that it cannot turn around and head back to the direction it came from.

Moles are rarely seen in the ground as most of the mole species come out of the tunnel at night. You will see the young moles out when they are making their own tunnels or when they are looking for grass to make a nest in the tunnel. Moles also are seen during the day as they look for food and water. A mole cannot stay hungry for more than twenty four hours because it will starve.

It is also worth noting that moles are also preyed on. One of the biggest predators of ground moles are the barn owls.
