How to Set Up a Wagon Garden Planter
- 1). Clean the wagon bed. Use a hose with a spray nozzle to squirt dirt and debris out of the bed. Use a whisk broom to brush out tough spots. While the wagon bed will be covered with soil and plants, old seeds or weeds in the wagon bed might germinate and wreak havoc on your plants.
- 2). Move the wagon to a location where it will get six to eight hours of full sun daily and protection from wind.
- 3). Pour 4 inches to 5 inches of pea gravel into the wagon bed to raise the ground level and ensure quick drainage. Although water will run down through the soil and out the seams of the wagon bed, the gravel will give plants an added level of security.
- 4). Mix quick-draining soil and organic compost in equal parts in a pile to the side of the wagon. This mixture will provide support, drainage and long-term nutrition for the plants.
- 5). Shovel the soil mixture into the wagon bed to build your growing foundation. Fill the wagon bed to within 2 inches to 3 inches of its lip to give plants room to grow and keep them from being shaded by the sides of the wagon bed. This high soil level also offers better access when gardening.
- 6). Plant a vegetable patch in the wagon bed or try planting bushy or vining flowers to grow up and over the sides.
