Reasons to Join Tumblr
- Tumblr's motto is "The easiest way to blog." It attempts to live up to that promise by making it relatively simple to post a variety of content types. If you want to post a photo on your blog, for example, you don't have to insert it into a standard text post (although you can if you want to); just select the "Photo" post type, add a caption and upload it as a standalone photo post. Other content types include video, chats, quotes, audio and links.
- The ability to easily interact with other Tumblr users is appealing to many who use the service. Like on Twitter and Facebook, you can "follow" other users; their posts will appear on a common "dashboard" page. You can show your appreciation for a friend's post by clicking the "like" button; you can also "reblog," or repost, another user's content on your blog, either to spread information or add your own commentary. Users can also send each other private messages or questions through the Ask feature.
- There are several ways to get your blog noticed by the greater Tumblr community. If your posts gain traction, you could be featured in the Directory Spotlight or have a particularly compelling photo or drawing of yours show up on everyone's dashboard via the Radar. You can also use the post content types to show off your skills or portfolio; for example, post photos if you're a photographer, or link to your articles online if you're a writer.
- Have an RSS feed of content on another site, such as Flickr, Wordpress or Twitter? You can easily integrate this content into your Tumblr page by adding the feed links to your blog via the "Customize" page. Or add a widget from those sites into the sidebar of your Tumblr page. Either way, Tumblr is a useful tool for putting all your online content into one feed.
