Hair Loss Myths

There are a lot of myths regarding hair loss and the different ways to treat it. Rob Angelino, founder of hair restoration clinic, HAIRLAB, a medical and natural hair restoration center located in Beverly Hills, California, attempts to clear up some common misconceptions.

One myth is that the “gene” for baldness comes from the mother’s side or the father’s side. We’ve heard both. The truth is that it is not from either side of the family for sure. Nobody really knows genetically if it from either or both. It seems to be just a genetic luck of the draw if you are going to lose your hair or not.

Another misconception regards hair transplants. A big myth out there is that what we do is “hair plugs.” We don’t. Hair plugs are those are old-school hair transplants that were clumpy and obvious which you could see and they looked horrible. We do extremely detailed hair transplant surgery where we artfully replace each of your own hair follicles in the unique pattern your hair used to grow in. It is an art that requires finesse, a skilled surgeon and an entire team of technicians. We don’t do hair plugs.

There are some clinics that are just transplant mills and they just pump patients through. They will use devices that have multiple needles and they will just punch a pattern. Unlike HAIRLAB, those places do not have any finesse, artistry, style or design to restoring hair. They don’t do enough grafts because often they charge by the graft and clients opt to pay less. We call those places “sewing machines.” Many people don’t know enough to avoid places like that. Even some celebrities have gone to these guys and gotten terrible jobs done.

Some other myths regard fraudulent products and services that are out there being sold as a golden cure that will regrow your hair forever. Scalp Med is one such product. They are a company that does over $200 million a year in business and all they really sell is repackaged Rogaine. That may work for a  short time, but it will only achieve thin wispy hair and if you stop using it that hair is going to fall out. Surprisingly, some of the late night infomercial stuff actually does work. Biosil is a natural supplement product that is available at Whole Foods and works extremely well. By providing the proteins collagen, keratin and elastin, it helps your body produce better hair, skin and nails. You take the all-natural capsules twice a day and it reduces wrinkles and improves collagen. Sometimes hair loss is simply from a lack of the right diet and proteins and taking a supplement to provide you with an extra boost of the enzymes you need might be all it takes to get your hair growing back.
