Niaspan medication and its effects

Niaspan (Niacin):

Niacin (Niaspan) is also known as nicotine acid or vitamin B3. It is essential for the growth and development of the body in a human being or even animals. Niaspan is a drug used for the treatment in slowing down the cholesterol level and treat the chance of second level of heart attack. It reduces the fats present in the blood.

This vitamin gets mixed with water. It is a non-protein chemical substance which chains with a definite protein apoenzyme to form an active enzyme that absorbs the fats and carbohydrates. This vitamin survives even if it is cooked.

Side effects:

Some of Niaspan Side effects are skin related problems such as:
  • The face of the skin gets red and feels scratchy
  • The facial skin becomes dry
  • The skin changes its color from brown to dark or black (acanthosis nigricans)
  • Stomach and intestines problem such as digestion related issue and stomach gets upset
  • Liver problem due to the malfunctioning of the liver to metabolize the starches

Celluloses, Fats, Protein (polypeptides) and Vitamin
  • It increases the presence of sugar in the blood causing diabetes
  • Unconsciousness
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Breathlessness
  • Swollen skin
  • Pain in the muscles
  • Ache, or tiredness, cold and head pain
  • Lightheadedness
  • Body gets warm, soreness, or stinging feeling of skin
  • Feeling of cold and hot
  • Sleeping symptoms (sleeplessness)

Interaction of Niacin with other drugs:

There are some of the drugs that effects the Niaspan (Niacin) process are:
  • A blood cleaner anticoagulant e.g. Lawarin.
  • Excess use of medicine or vitamin which contain Naicain.
  • Medicine for blood pressure and heart problem such as maleate (Amlodipine).
  • Benzothiazepines (Cartia) used for the treatment of high BP.
  • Felodipine medicine (Plendil).
  • Nicardipine drug (Cardene SR).
  • Nifedipine medicine (Nifediac, Nifedical).
  • Hemorrhage medicine such as nimodipine (Nimotop).
  • Kosmix (nisoldipine).
  • Drug such as Verelan PM, Calan, Bosoptin and Covera.
  • Doxazosin mesylate drug (Carduran).
  • Drug to prevent angina attack Isosorbide mononitrate.

Patients should not use these drugs along with Niaspan. Patient should inform the doctor if they are using these medicines as there might be a need of dose adjustment.

Precautions:

Do not over dose.  Take once daily.

Take the Niaspan mg after having your meal and make a  fixed schedule to take the medicine.

Due to the reaction of this medicine you will get dizzy so do not get up at once if you are sitting.

While using Niaspan medication do not drink hot beverages right after the medicine is used.

Do not drink alcohol while using Niaspan since the liver will get damaged and it will slow down the functionality of this medicine.

Do not combine other blood sugar controller medicine such as colestipol with Niaspan medicine.  If the patient  has to use this medicine, there should be a gap of at least 4-6 hours between the two.
