- 1). Use the tape measure to measure the space along the back edge where the countertop will meet the wall. If there is a backsplash against the wall, take this space into account.
- 2). Measure the depth of the existing countertop, or the space from the edge of the cabinet to the wall.
- 3). Measure the height of the backsplash. Add this measurement to the thickness of your countertop measurements.
- 4). Measure the space of the overhang from the front edge of the cabinet to the front edge of the countertop. This is usually about 1½ inches long.
- 5). Make a note of where you will need the countertop ends to be finished. Add an inch to the measurements for each finished end that you need.
