If you want to build character in your children, you must teach them to things that will stick with them for the rest of their lives.
Your children must learn proper values and to respect authority in order for them to have a successful child.

Learning proper values to live your life are much more important than any academic values could be.
Values that you need to instill in your children are integrity, respect, kindness, empathy, and love.
  The first thing you must teach your children to know what is right and what is wrong.
This must not be a question in their mind, as it must be something that is innate inside of them.
Teaching your children to respect you and other adults is essential for successful life.
Teaching your children to be kind and nice to everyone in this world, no matter what race, age or sex, will determine the quality of life they live.
Teaching your children to be empathetic towards others who may not be as fortunate to have what they do is a key attribute as well.
Last, you must teach your children to love each and every person on this planet equally.
  The second thing you must teach your children is respect for authority is a major determination for the type of character your child will have.
No matter whether your children are in preschool or high school, respect for authority will go a long way.
They must learn respect for authority by you demonstrating this same value in life.
This can be done in a different number of ways.
  If you are religious, praying to God is one way to show respect for authority.
By reading the Bible, or whatever the holy book is of your religion, it shows that you are respecting authority by following God's will.
  If you are not religious, there are other ways you can show respect for authority.
One example that is very easily done is to stop and talk to a police officer the next time you see one.
Make sure you thank them for the job they are doing and will continue doing.
Make sure you acknowledge that they are responsible for keeping our society safe and in order.
By respecting police officers, you will show your children a respect for authority.
