Martin Luther King Activities for the City of Plano
DFW has a lot of activities planned to celebrate the life and achievements of Martin Luther King Jr. The City of Plano is gearing up for some special celebrations including a Power Breakfast, Unity Walk, a special program at City Hall and more. Here is the calendar of events for 2012.
Saturday, January 14, 2012
8:30 a.m. Power Breakfast: Free Breakfast and presentation by college students at Collin College Spring Creek Campus.
Book scholarships and MLK Unity Scholarships will be awarded. Sponsored by Collin College.
10:45 a.m. Community Unity Walk: Assembly begins at 1 0.a.m at the staging area; DART Rail Parker Road Station, North Parking Lot, 2600 Archerwood St. Grand Marshall: Bruce Glasscock, Plano City Manager.
11:30 a.m. City Hall Program: Begins immediately following the Unity Walk. Plano Municipal Building, Council Chambers, 1520 K Avenue. The Unity Walk and City Hall Program sponsored by The City of Plano Cultural Affairs Commission. Keynote Speaker: Dr. Myrtle Hightower and entertainment by Doc Gibbs.
12 Noon Health Fair & Free Luncheon: Boys & Girls Club Douglass Center, 1111 Ave H. Visit with over 25 vendors in various health and education fields. Sponsored by Chick-fil-A (Beltline & Preston), PepsiCo and Frito Lay.

7 p.m. MLK All-Community Choir Concert: A musical tribute to Dr. King featuring special guest "Mahogany" and North Dallas Bible Fellowship Men's Ensemble at Custer Road United Methodist Church, 6601 Custer Road, Rev.
Ron Henderson, Senior Pastor and Tim Morrison, Music Ministry Director. The public is invited to join the choir; rehearsal will be Sunday, January 15 at 4 p.m. Sponsored by Reed Enterprises (Schlotzsky's) and Custer Road UMC.

It celebrates the life and acomplishments of the great civil rights activitist, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It's also known as Martin Luher King, Jr. Day or MLK Day. In additional to federal employers (the US Postal Service, banks, government offices), some businesses close in observance of the holiday.
