- 1). Turn on a light or other device connected to the GFI outlet.
- 2). Press the "Test" button on the GFI outlet that is located in the center of the outlet. On some GFI outlets, the test button is color-coded red. The device plugged in to the outlet should be turned off.
- 3). Press the "Reset" button on the GFI outlet to restore power to the socket. This button is color-coded black on some GFI outlets. Similarly, if you have not been testing the GFI outlet and there is no power to the equipment it is powering, press the "Reset" button to restore power to the socket.
- 4). Plug the GFI tester in to the outlet. The GFI tester will provide you with feedback on whether the GFI outlet or the wiring to the outlet requires replacement.
