Accutane Linked to a Number of Side Effects
Off label Use of Accutane:
The skin disease acne is a common disease found in teens and can continue into adulthood and last for long periods of time. It can be very disturbing to an individual because it is easily observable. This skin disease affects some 80-90% of adolescents of which only about 20% require medical treatment. Government reports have indicated most of the patients, whether teens or adults, had only mild forms of acne while on Accutane therapy. In other words, according to the FDA, most of the patients using this therapy should not have taken Accutane. Due to Accutane side effects, the drug is now used as a second line of defense as it was initially intended.
Accutane Class Action Lawsuit:
Documented Accutane side effects include depression, psychosis, suicide, hair loss (may be permanent), joint and muscle pain, , osteoporosis, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), heart attack, stroke, seizures, and birth defects. Shortly after Accutane came on the market, birth defects and spontaneous fetal abortions were reported by physicians. It was then realized that Accutane was a teratogen, meaning the drug causes severe birth defects. The FDA classified it as a category X drug, indicating birth defect complications. Associated birth defects included improper formation of the brain, face (ears and nose), and cardiovascular system. In response to these birth defects, in 2005 the FDA placed Accutane in the iPLEDGE program. The iPLEDGE program requires that all patients taking Accutane must register in this program. This program was to insure that all women of childbearing age were informed of proper use and closely monitored throughout therapy as well as one month after terminating this medication, and that treatment was not to extend beyond four to six months.
Hundreds of personal injury cases have been filed, alleging injuries cased by Accutane use. As of yet, there is no Accutane class action lawsuit.
If you have experienced depression, suicidal thoughts, birth defects, inflammatory bowel disease, or any other Accutane side effects you may be entitled to financial compensation. Accutane lawsuits are currently being filed around the country.
