How to Remodel a Bathroom for Less Money
- 1). Plan upscale wall color. Use white on the upper walls and pale tan on the lower walls with a chair rail molding dividing them, for example. Paint all trim stark white. Plan to install dark brown mirror framing and dark brown shelves for accent.
- 2). Install white fixtures purchased at a close-out sale -- toilet, sink and a pre-made acrylic shower-tub combo. Look for white cabinets at a close-out sale if you have ample floor space.
- 3). Buy porcelain ceramic tile in a light sand color. Install this with white grout for a nice, clean look. Purchase a bath rug in burgundy to add some extra color to the floor.
- 4). Change the light fixtures. Use a bar light over the vanity or a ceiling light fixture that complements nearby rooms or a hallway. Buy a chandelier-type light fixture with brown-tone metal and a pale gold globe for an overhead light, for example. Use a similar light fixture in a hallway outside the bathroom or in an adjoining bedroom to tie the spaces together.
- 5). Install inexpensive shelving and hanging hooks. Add a brown metal shelf or two to hold flowers, art objects or towels. Buy hanging hooks that have a decorative look -- hooks or clear glass knobs mounted on a mahogany toned board, for example.
