Lymphadenopathy

Updated June 10, 2015.

Definition: When lymph nodes are enlarged due to infection and the immune system's response to that infection or ovarian cancer cells spread to and are trapped in the lymph nodes, this enlargement is called "lymphadenopathy." The word can be broken down to lymph and adeno, meaning gland-like, and pathy, meaning something pathologic or abnormal is going on.

Pronunciation: limf-add-en-ahh-pah-thee

Examples: The lymphadenopathy that was seen in the pelvic area on CT scan images turned out to be due to metastatic ovarian cancer.
