Mechanical Engineering Graduate Scholarships

    American Society of Mechanical Engineers

    • The American Society of Mechanical Engineers offers several scholarship programs to graduate students. For example, the Kate Gleason Scholarship is available in the amount of $3,000, as of 2011. The Bruce J. Heim Foundation Scholarship is valued at $1,500 and available to graduate students whose career goal is to contribute to space exploration. Other available scholarships include the $4,000 International Gas Turbine Institute Scholarship and $2,000 Elisabeth M. and Winchell M. Parsons Scholarship. Applicants must be ASME members to be eligible for scholarship support.

    Society of Women Engineers

    • The Society of Women Engineers offers several graduate scholarships for female mechanical engineering students. For example, in 2011, the Baker Hughes Scholarship is awarded in the amount of $5,000 and open to students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Caterpillar Scholarship is valued at $2,400 and available to graduate students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Government Scholarships

    • The federal government offers some sources of scholarship money to graduate mechanical engineering students. For example, the U.S. Department of Defense offers the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship. This award provides support for Ph.D. students for three years and pays for the full cost of tuition, as well as providing a monthly cost-of-living stipend. Another available program is the SMART Scholarship for graduate students, which pays for the full cost of tuition, provides a cash award and provides financial assistance for textbooks and health insurance.

    School-Specific Scholarships

    • Often colleges and universities that offer graduate coursework in mechanical engineering also offer scholarship support. For example, doctoral students at Drexel University may be eligible for tuition support through the Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) in Mechanical Engineering and Sciences Program. Graduate students at Texas A&M offer several generous tuition assistance packages to graduate mechanical engineering students, such as the $40,000 per year National Excellence Fellowships and the $30,000 per year NSF IGERT Fellowships in Materials Science.
