How to Stain or Paint Trex Decking
- 1). Wait 12 to 16 weeks after installing your Trex deck before painting. Trex must fade before paint is applied, or discoloration of the finish may occur.
- 2). Fill a mop bucket with hot water and an ounce of dish soap. Mix the soap and water until suds form on the water's surface.
- 3). Scrub the Trex decking with the soapy water using a soft bristle brush. Scrub one plank at a time so you don't lose track of which ones you've cleaned.
- 4). Rinse all soapy residue off of the deck with a garden hose. Rinse until all soap bubbles subside. Allow the deck to dry completely. Depending on weather, this may take 24 to 48 hours.
- 5). Purchase a deck stain or deck finish paint from your paint supply store. Deck finish paint also requires priming the deck prior to application.
- 6). Pour a 1/2 gallon of stain or primer into a paint tray. Load a paintbrush and miniroller with the product. Dip the brush and roll the roller to load the bristles or fibers.
- 7). Apply the material to one board at a time using the brush to cover sides of the board and the miniroller to cover the face of the board. Roll out all lap marks. Rag off excess stain with clean painter's rags. Wait 24 hours for the stain or primer to dry.
- 8). Apply a finish coat of deck paint if you primed the deck.
