Ayurvedic Treatment for Cellulite

Ayurvedic Medicine


Ayurvedic medicine, also known as Ayurveda, originated in India thousands of years ago. It is one of the world's oldest medical systems.

In the United States, Ayurveda is considered an alternative medical practice.

Its aim is to balance the mind, body and spirit. It is believed this will promote wellness. According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, more than 200,000 adults used Ayurvedic medicine in the past year.

Diet


According to Ayurvedic medicine, people who eat a lot of fried food and fat have what's called a "kapha-provoking" diet, which leads to cellulite. The characteristics of kapha are heaviness, softness, sweetness and cold. To balance these, a "kapha-decreasing" diet is recommended.

Light, warming foods help balance kapha. Bean casseroles, light grain-and-vegetable combinations and clear soups made with beans and diced vegetables are ideal.

The three Ayurvedic tastes that help balance kapha are pungent, bitter and astringent. Apples, garbanzo beans with spices, and steamed broccoli or cauliflower with a light olive oil dressing make healthful snacks. Reduce salty, sweet and sour snacks.

Carrots, asparagus, okra, bitter leafy greens and Brussels sprouts are good vegetable choices.

Zesty, warming spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander, cayenne, black pepper, dried ginger and cloves are helpful in balancing kapha.

Drink liquids regularly, but avoid cold beverages.

Massage


A basic of Ayurvedic medicine is self-massage. One form is called Garshana massage, and is highly recommended as a cellulite treatment. Ayurveda says it is ideal for those with a kapha constitution.

You perform the Garshana massage with a bath brush, loofah sponge or raw-silk gloves called Garshana gloves. It is a lymphatic massage, done with strokes going from the foot up to the heart. It is done on a dry body before a shower.

The massage begins at the soles of the feet, with quick back-and-forth movements and a light pressure.

You can increase pressure as tolerated. Make circular movements on the joints, and up-and-down movements on the long bones. Pay particular attention to areas that have cellulite or extra fat. Using a natural bath bristle with a long handle will facilitate massage of the back.

Exercise


Ayurvedic medicine recommends any exercise that includes movement of the legs and thighs as good for reducing cellulite.

Ayurveda suggests yoga as a way of balancing kapha. Yoga postures that develop strength and promote stamina are ideal. An Ayurvedic yoga teacher will develop a routine based on the individual, rather than presenting a set series of poses to the class.

Cellulite is a cosmetic condition that is improved by any type of exercise, and by weight loss from any type of reduced-calorie diet. It is advisable to consult a physician before attempting any exercise or weight-loss plan.
