High School Internships Require A Cover Letter

Doing high school internships is not something that most students think of, but these can be very beneficial. They allow the student to gain work experience in the field of choice while at the same time building connections. Prior to applying for an internship, the student should develop a professional cover letter and resume. Having a cover letter that summarizes their work experience, education, and skills may put a student above all other applicants for the internship.

The cover letter should be formatted similarly to written business correspondence and include the date, sender address, and recipient address. Students can refer to Microsoft Word templates or one of the many cover letter tutorials online or in books if they are not familiar with the proper formatting techniques. The letter should include appropriate top, bottom, left, and right margins and designation of paragraphs.

The cover letter body contains the information that the applicant wishes to convey to the prospective employer. This includes computer and leadership skills, an educational overview, and a summary of all relevant work experience. The applicant should also explain the interest in the career field and the company by including some basic details regarding each. This will show that the individual has researched the opportunity and can draw a correlation between his or her qualifications and the internship.

Online sources contain samples of cover letters and these can be used as a reference document. The applicant should not make the cover letter as generic as many of these examples, but should instead tailor it to the available work opportunity. The letter should be clear and contain adequate detail, but at the same time be concise. It is important that only relevant details be included and that the letter remains focused on central points, rather than rambling.

Both a cover letter and a resume should be submitted during the application process for high school internships. A professional cover letter will be properly addressed and formatted and will contain a summary of the skills and experience of the student. Effort should be made to keep the body of the letter focused and concise while including the relevant details.
