Toyota"s New Highlander Hybrid SUV

Toyota plans to introduce a hybrid version of its top-selling Highlander SUV sometime during the 2005 calendar year. The new vehicle will be the first 7-passenger hybrid SUV.

Engine and Powertrain

The Highlander Hybrid will be equipped with a 3.3-liter V6 engine and will be powered by a new version of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain--a system developed to meet the load-carrying requirements of a mid-size SUV.

The new system will offer total peak power of about 270 hp (gas engine and electric motor combined).

Fuel Economy

Toyota says that the Highlander Hybrid will offer excellent acceleration and the best fuel economy ratings in the mid-size SUV segment. They expect the combined city-highway fuel efficiency rating to surpass 27.6 miles per gallon (the current average for a compact sedan).

More Highlights

Highlander Hybrid will come standard with front-wheel-drive, but 4WD will be available. Other standard features will include air conditioning, power windows, mirrors, and door locks, cruise control, a tilt steering wheel, and a 3-in-1 AM/FM/ETR cassette/CD sound system with six speakers.
A multi-function display will calculate and display information such as instant and average fuel economy, outside temperature and low tire pressure.

A navigation system will be available on the Limited Highlander, and it will also monitor the gas/electric power distribution of the Hybrid Synergy Drive.

A newly designed front grille, bumper, and rear LED taillamps will give the Highlander Hybrid a slightly different appearance than other Highlander SUVs.
