Teething Remedies for Puppies

When puppies are born, they do not have any teeth. The first baby teeth come in at about 2 weeks old. At 12 weeks a puppy will have all its baby teeth. Soon afterward, the puppy will start to grow its adult teeth. Adult teeth continue to grow until the puppy is nine months to one year old. Throughout his first year of life, your puppy will experience teething pain. You can help your puppy deal with teething using these home remedies.

    Chew Toys

    • Chew toys are the best way to prevent puppies from chewing on other items around the house, such as shoes, children's toys, furniture, and other objects. Give a puppy one or two chew toys at a time. If you offer your puppy more toys, she may not be able to differentiate between the chew toys and other objects around the house (Reference 2). Chew toys help alleviate teething pain and help wear down your puppy's gums so her teeth can break through more easily.

    Cold Items

    • Cold items help numb the pain of teething. Soak several old towels or washcloths in water and partially wring them out. Place the towels and washcloths in the freezer. When your puppy starts to show signs of teething (inflamed gums, whining, or chewing), give him a frozen towel or washcloth to chew on. Your puppy will not be able to chew up the towel, but the cold will help his gums feel less painful.

    Massage

    • According to the Daily Puppy.com, some vets recommend massaging your puppy's gums both on the inside and outside of its mouth (Reference 2). Rub along the gumline outside the mouth, massaging gently for several minutes. Inside the mouth, rub the gums gently for several minutes. This also helps prepare your puppy for future dental exams.

    Ice

    • Another way to help your puppy go through teething with less pain is to provide ice cubes for her to chew on. It is best to use large cubes, so they cannot get stuck in your puppy's throat. Use ice blocks made from water frozen in plastic cups or plastic bags. You can also use crushed ice, which has pieces small enough for your puppy to swallow easily.

    Peanut Butter

    • If your puppy seems reluctant to chew on designated chew toys, you can encourage the process by placing a small dab of peanut butter on the toy and presenting it to your puppy. He will try to chew the peanut butter off of the toy, and once his scent is on the toy he will remember it as his personal property.
