What Is the Septum Part of a Human Nose?

    Function

    • The function of the nasal septum is to separate the nasal cavity, which brings air to the lungs.

    Structures

    • The nasal septum has five structures. They are the perpendicular plate of ethmoid bone, the vomer bone, cartilage, crest of the maxillary bone and crest of the palatine bone.

    Surgeries

    • A deviated septum is a condition in which the septum of your nose is displaced to one side. A surgeon can repair it by inserting silicone button close to the affected area. Surgery on the nasal septum is called septoplasty.

    Piercing

    • Septum piercing involves puncturing the cartilage with sharp needle and inserting a ring. Septum piercing was common among Native Americans in the early part of the century, and still occurs in New Guinea.

    Pop culture

    • Septum piercing is becoming commonplace in pop culture. Actress Scarlett Johansson had her septum pierced in late 2006. Some fans expressed outrage, while others also had their septum pierced.
