Definition of Mrna

    Features

    • Each mRNA molecule contains information for one protein, with ranges from 400 to 10,000 bases long. mRNA also contains nucleotides, of which there are four kinds: uracil, guanine, adenine and cytosine. Each strand of mRNA contains three groups of three nucleotides; each group of three is called a codon.

    Codons

    • Each codon contains a template for amino acids, and certain codon groups' templates are for the same amino acids.

    Function

    • mRNA takes the code from the DNA to protein synthesis sites that are found in the cytoplasm of cells.

    History

    • Two scientists in 1960 formed the mRNA hypothesis and, in 1964, another scientist named Sydney Brenner confirmed it.

    Misconceptions

    • Not all mRNA acts the same way in its life; prokaryotic mRNA degrades faster than eukaryotic mRNA.
