Fluid Bowel Cleansers That Don't Use Sodium Phosphate
- Use water from the tap. If you live in an area where water quality is less than desired, filter the water using a device attached to the faucet, or buy a half gallon of filtered water from the grocery store. Heat the water to approximately 103 degrees Fahrenheit. Pour the solution into a 2 quart enema bag
- Lubricate the applicator tip of the enema bag with a water-based lubricant such as KY gel. Insert the tip approximately 6 to 8 inches inside the rectum. Release the clamp of the enema bag to begin the water flow from the enema bag into the rectum. Begin administering the enema in the knee-chest position. Move to the left side after one to three minutes. Move to the right side after an additional one to three minutes. Alternating positions for a cleansing enema helps to ensure that the solution reaches farther into the colon for effective cleansing. Massage the abdomen down the left side, across the bottom of the abdomen, up the right side and left to right across the top of the abdomen. Massaging as you are receiving the enema helps the solution flow deeper into the colon for a more effective cleansing. Retain the enema for a minimum of three minutes.
- Sit on the toilet with your abdomen leaning slightly forward. Massage the abdomen down the right side, from right to left across the lower abdomen, up the left side and left to right across the top of the abdomen as you expel the enema. Continue massaging the abdomen as you expel all waste matter from the colon.
