Save Money: Top 7 Ways to Save Money at Home

Saving money couldn't be any more important to the average American than it is right now. The hard part is changing your spending habits. The tips in this article will allow you to change very little while you save a lot. There are plenty of easy changes you can make around your home that will make a difference on your monthly bills.

Tip #1 If you have a security system or live near a fire hydrant let your insurance company know this information. Most insurance companies will give you a discount and may even refund a part of your premiums paid up to date. Also, if you have a trampoline, sell it. A trampoline is a hazard waiting to happen and makes your insurance premiums very high. You will make money when you sell it and save on your monthly insurance costs.

Tip #2 Turn off the lights. This is common sense but so many people leave the lights on when they are not needed. Make it a habit to flip the switch when leaving the room as well as turning off unused appliances. Reminder notes for children will help them learn this valuable habit.

Tip #3 Let foods cool down on the counter. Before you put hot food in the fridge or freezer let it cool on the counter or outside. Your refrigerator won't have to work so hard to cool it down.

Tip #4 Get rid of magazine subscriptions. Use the local library to read newspapers & magazines. Also, it is a cheap way to meet people, use the internet and even learn a foreign language.

Tip #5 Install a gas water heater. Gas costs less than electricity. If you already have a gas water heater, lowering the temperature will help greatly on that monthly bill.

Tip #6 Install a programmable thermostat. These devices regulate the temperature in your home automatically to the temperature that you set. A programmable thermostat can easily cut your energy bill by 10-20%

Tip #7 Start a garden. This is an inexpensive hobby that will produce fresh fruits and vegetables. Going vegetarian may be a stretch for some of you but it will certainly save on your monthly food bill especially if you are eating the fruits and veggies from your own garden.

Here's to your success!
