My 2005 Nissan Titan Won't Start

    • 1). Put your key in the ignition of your Nissan Titan and try to turn it. If the key will not turn, it is likely due to a problem with the steering column lock. If the steering wheel is not in the correct position, a lock will prevent the key from turning. Try turning the steering wheel to the left and right and wiggling the key. Once the steering column is in the correct position, the key will turn.

    • 2). Check the fuel level. If it is low or empty or you are unsure how much fuel is in the fuel tank due to a malfunctioning fuel gauge, add one gallon of the appropriate fuel to the tank and try to start the engine again. Without enough fuel the engine will not start or will sputter out after starting.

    • 3). Check the battery. An easy way to check the battery in a vehicle like the Nissan Titan is to turn the key to the "Accessories" mode and turn on the headlights or interior lights. If the lights do not come on or are very dull, the battery is likely the cause of your Titan not starting. The battery may need to be replaced, charged or jump-started.

    • 4). Listen for telling sounds. There are a few sounds when attempting to start an engine that will indicate a specific problem. When you turn the key if you hear nothing at all, there may be a faulty ignition switch. If you hear clicking sounds, there may be a faulty starter. If the engine does turn over but does not stay running or sputters out, there may be a problem with the fueling system.

    • 5). Open the vehicle's hood and check the fluids. Locate the oil and coolant dipsticks and pull out each one. Check to be sure each one is filled at least to the minimum fill line because low or empty fluid levels can cause damage to the engine or problems with the engine starting. Add fluids if needed and try to start your Titan again.

    • 6). Call a professional mechanic if you cannot determine the problem with your Nissan Titan. Have the vehicle towed to your Nissan dealership or a garage for repair. A Nissan dealership will be able to determine the problem with your Titan because dealership mechanics specialize in Nissan motors.
