How to Check Income Tax Refund Status
- 1). Wait for the prescribed amount of time before you check the status of your refund. You can check the status 72 hours after e-filing or three weeks after filing by mail. Generally, you can check your refund status after you receive a notice that the IRS has received the return.
- 2). Check the status of your refund online if you e-filed. Visit the IRS's "Get Refund Status" page (see Resources). Enter your Social Security number, filing status and the amount of your refund in the appropriate fields. Type the refund as an exact whole dollar amount. Click the "Submit" button to receive status information.
- 3). Call the IRS to check your refund over the telephone if this is more convenient. You may call the IRS Refund Hotline at 800-829-1954 or the IRS TeleTax System at 800-829-4477. Provide your Social Security number, filing status and the exact whole dollar amount of your refund. You can also check your refund status with the IRS2Go Smartphone application, which is available from the Android Marketplace.
