Walk of Life Program - Day 27
Updated August 24, 2015.
Today's Walk
25-50 minute walk in the healthy heart zone 50-60% of your maximum heart rate. Finish your walk at a moderate pace with 5 minutes of cool down at a very easy pace.
Red-Line Zone
Exercise intensity in the Red-Line Zone is 90-100% of your maximum heart rate. It burns calories faster than the other zones, but 90% are carbohydrates, 10% fat and less than 1% protein.
Train in this zone only for a few minutes at a time, with clearance from your physician.
It is generally reserved for short bursts during interval training.
Racewalkers often use this pace as part of an Economy Workout. If you are an advance walker, you may want to do one economy workout a week to improve your speed.

You're Not the Waste Disposal
I see this at every family gathering - my mom friends finishing off what their kids left on the plate. Parents - you are not garbage disposals. There are as many calories in those leftover kid portions as there were in what was on your plate. It is easy to be eating double portions by doing this. Dish up your kids a little less than you might think they should eat, and let them have a bit more if they still want more. And then scrape the plate into the compost bin to replenish the earth, not your tummy.
The Next Generation
What legacy do you want to leave for the next generation? It may be your kids, your younger relatives, your students or other young folks you encounter.
Is it how you take care of your body? How you overcame disease or obstacles? A piece of art, music, writing? Something you taught a younger person? What have you done or could you do to inspire a youngster?
