Exploring The Hidden Places In New York

If you are in New York attending a conference from out of town, why not check out some of the places not even real New Yorkers know about? You don't just come to the city to travel from generic restaurant to your hotel via cab. Hop on a subway and do some exploring and find the real New York culture. From a beer garden hidden behind a pizzeria to a park above the financial district, if you are shepherding around a group this will make you instantly cool.

First, foremost in oddities are the New York Earth room. Situated at 141 Wooster between West Houston and Prince Street, and on the second floor of a mysterious storefront on Wooster. Ring the bell on the ground floor to enter, trot ups the stairs, and you will find a 3,600 square foot room covered in 22 inches of topsoil. Now granted, 3600 of space would normally rent for thousands of dollars, so it is kind of like finding a unicorn to find a loft full of dirt in an area for prime real estate.

For a select group meeting in an intimate outdoor space, try the Birreria Room at 259 Bleecker. You must make reservations at Pizza Roma for access to a secluded Cornelia Street alleyway leading to a 20 seat patio. The beer menu features mostly Italian brews like AMA Bionda and Moretti. If you are hungry you can dine on items from the restaurant like Roman-style pizza.

For a lofty escape seek out the €elevated acre€ at 55 Water Street (off Old Slip). It is a track of lush green, a secret retreat in the grey bustle of the city. It sits behind 55 Water Street, one of the biggest office buildings in the city. To find the oasis take the stairway or one of the escalator's adjacent to the building's Chase bank. There are benches and a walkway and a nice selection of greenery.

For some access to ahead of the trend shopping check out Community 54. Located in the lower east side at 54 Clinton (between Rivington and Stanton Street) this menswear shop is located hidden behind the emporium's storefront video game arcade. Find the walk way to the back of the store, hidden in a phone booth, and you can check out the adjacent menswear shop. In stock you'll find vintage brand-name designer collaborations and street wear. Explore even further back and you will discover an outdoor events space covered in graffiti by renowned street artists.

For the more erudite among you, take the subway to Brooklyn and wind up at 56 Bogal St (at Seigel Street, Bushwick Brooklyn). Here you'll find a building containing artists' studio and galleries. Look for a gray door on the first floor with a small €Come Inside,€ sign hanging from the doorknob. Here you will find a collection of small-press titles a works by up-and-comers to peruse. If you want to borrow a tome you can sign up for a yearlong membership with a donation of $20 or ten books.
