DIY Tivo
- In order to have TiVo-like functionality, you will need a few accessories. First, a computer is needed. If you want to hook the computer up to your TV, it is usually best to have a standalone machine that will be used solely for DVR purposes. Next, you will need a TV tuner. This is the device that allows your computer to read the signal from your cable or satellite service. The best tuners on the market are made by Hauppauge, and range in price from around $70 to a couple hundred, depending on the model you choose to purchase. Be sure to read each product description carefully to ensure your tuner supports your service (some models do not support high-definition service, for example).
- Any computer running Windows Vista or greater already has a top-of-the-line DVR system built in. Microsoft has included Windows Media Center in their operating system as a means to improve the entertainment experience. Once you have your TV tuner plugged in and the cable attached, you will need to set up Windows Media Center to receive your TV signal.
First, navigate to the "Settings" menu and choose the "TV" option, then choose "Set Up TV Signal." Simply follow the instructions on the screen, enter your zip code and choose your service provider in order to obtain guide information, and Media Center will automatically detect your TV signal and allow you to watch TV on the computer. Within the TV guide, you can choose the shows you want to record and set a recording schedule, just like TiVo. - Windows Media Center will work fine for most users, but others may desire a more customizable approach. MythTV is actually an entire operating system built to be an all-in-one media center. It is a free version of Linux that is relatively simple to install and use.
You will first need to download the operating system and install it on your computer. During the install, you will be asked to identify your TV tuner, and the installation will install the drivers needed to make it work with the operating system. Once the tuner is effectively installed, you will be asked to enter your service information in order for the TV guide to be downloaded. Once the installation is finished, you will be able to record your TV shows on any schedule you desire, just like TiVo.
