What Is Benzocaine?

    How To Use Benzocaine

    • Benzocaine should be used according to the directions on the package containing it or as prescribed by a physician. The medication should not be used for longer than recommended. Your body may absorb too much benzocaine if applied over a large area of the body, if you apply heat to the affected area, or if you cover the area on which the benzocaine is applied. Avoid putting benzocaine on any area that is wounded or infected.

    Missed Dose

    • Benzocaine is only applied as needed, and no ill effect besides discomfort will occur from missing a dose. If you miss a dose of benzocaine, do not apply more than directed at the next application of the medication. If too much benzocaine is applied, more numbness than usual will occur.

    Drug Interactions

    • Benzocaine does not commonly react with other drugs that are taken orally or injected. Do not use benzocaine while using other topical anesthetics. Make sure to consult your doctor before using benzocaine. Make sure that your doctor is aware of all of the minerals, herbal supplements and OTC (over the counter) medications that you are using.

    Side Effects

    • In some cases, Benzocaine may cause a reaction on the skin it is applied to. Some of the side effects that can occur are burning, itching and skin rash. If you are allergic to benzocaine you may notice the development of breathing issues, along with swelling of the throat, tongue, face or lips. Be sure to alert your doctor if any of these serious side effects occur.

    Other Warnings

    • Benzocaine should not be used when you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless directed by a doctor. Discontinue use of benzocaine after 7 days of use if your condition or symptoms do not improve, unless instructed to continue by a medical professional. Before using this medication for a skin problem, make sure that you have contacted your doctor and verified that you do not have an allergy to benozcaine or are taking a drug that may interact with benzocaine. Avoid using benzocaine on any child under the age of 2 years old unless directed to do so by the child's doctor.
