How to Use Starrett Vernier Calipers
- 1). Make sure the vernier scale is working properly. Loosen the locking screw and move the slider. The caliper should read zero when it is closed completely. If it is not at zero, try to adjust it to read zero. If you cannot adjust it to reach zero you will need to add or subtract to account for the offset.
- 2). Place the caliper's jaws lightly around the item you want to measure. If the item is round, make sure you measure the item's whole diameter. The caliper has two sets of jaws: one you can place around the item and another set that fits inside the item and measures the inside diameter. The caliper may also have a metal bar that is used to measure depth.
- 3). Read the measurement. First, read the centimeter mark on the fixed scale to the left of the zero marking on the vernier scale. Next find the millimeter mark on the fixed scale that it slightly to the left of the zero mark. Find the spot on the vernier scale where it lines up with the millimeter marks on the fixed scale. Add this number to the first centimeter reading.
- 4). Perform regular maintenance. Clean the vernier caliper's measuring surfaces. You can wipe it down with a dry cloth (or use cleaning oil). Store it in a dry place.
