Bariatric Surgery Can Eliminate Type 2 Diabetes

A major study published in The American Journal of Medicine in March (2009) states that bariatric surgery can have an immediate, lasting and highly beneficial impact on those with type 2 diabetes.
As a matter of fact, the surgery improved or completely eliminated the disease in well over half the patients participating in the study.
Type 2 diabetes occurs when the insulin produced by the body is not as efficient at removing sugar from the blood stream, leading to high blood sugar levels.
This differs from Type 1 diabetes, which involves a complete loss of insulin production.
The study dealt with 621 individual studies ranging from 1990-2006 to investigate the benefit of the surgery for patients with type 2 diabetes.
  The results were astonishing.
Our of the 621 individuals, 78.
1% of the patients diagnosed with diabetes experienced complete resolution and  86.
6% of the study group that had not been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, experienced improved or resolution as a result of the surgery.
While obesity is a main risk factor in type 2 diabetes and over 90% of patients are overweight or obese, diet and exercise has been the prescribed way to curb the effects of the disease.
After bariatric surgery and based on laboratory results of insulin and glucose readings, it appears the surgery completely and surgically removed the obesity risk factor and the diabetes managed to resolve itself and has a lasting effect.
This also lends evidence to the notion that type 2 diabetes is directly related to obesity and inactivity.
The good news is, 82% of the patients had no type 2 diabetes in the first 2 years after surgery and 62% remained free of diabetes more than 2 years after surgery.
Medical professionals feel that the next step is to conduct randomized clinical trials comparing surgery and medical therapies for type 2 diabetes are need as the next step to verify that the surgery can stop this debilitating disease.
