Blood Thinner Medicine

Warfarin is a medication that has been commonly used since the 1950's to prevent blood clots from forming and or growing larger in the body.
Warfarin is commonly prescribed for certain types of irregular heartbeats and people with replacement or mechanical heart valves as well as for those who have suffered a heart attack.
Warfarin is a blood thinner and it works by decreasing the clotting ability of the blood.
So where did warfarin get its name anyway? Well warfarin was named after its discovery at the university of Wisconsin.
The first part of the name warfarin (warf) is the abbreviation for Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation and the ending (arin) which represents that its linked with coumarin.
So now you know how warfarin got its name.
Warf also funded the key research.
Warfarin is more popularly known under the brand names marketed by the major pharmaceutical companies such as Coumadin, Jantoven, Marevan, Lawarin, and Waran.
Warfarin is primarily used to stop blood from clotting.
Here's an interesting factoid: warfarin was initially marketed as a pesticide against rats and mice and is still widely popular for this purpose.
Shortly after its debut warfarin was found to be effective and relatively safe for preventing the abnormal formation and migration of blood clots in many disorders.
It was approved for use as a medication in the early 1950s and has remained popular medication ever since.
Warfarin or coumadin or any one of the brand names above are the most widely prescribed anti blood clotting drugs used in North America and in the United Kingdom for that matter.
So what are the most common side effects associated with Warfarin? Well since the drug prevents the blood from clotting the most common side effect of warfarin is hemorrhaging or bleeding.
The risk of severe bleeding is small but it certainly can happen and any benefit needs to outweigh this risk when warfarin is considered for treatment.
It's imperative that when taking warfarin that a person follow their doctors instructions very carefully.
Keep in mind that warfarin sodium is the generic medication to coumadin.
Generic medications are always less expensive and accomplish the same objective in most cases.
Doctors don't always prescribe the generic equivalents to the brand name medications.
You have to remember to ask your doctor to prescribe the generic if one is available.
Sometimes there isn't one available and you're stuck taking the brand name and unfortunately paying the higher price.
