Italian-American Associations
- The oldest and largest Italian-American organization is the Order Sons of Italy in America (osia.org), or OSIA. OSIA was founded in 1905 and has an approximate enrollment of 26 million members. The original purpose of OSIA was to help Italian immigrants adjust to life in the United States. Some of OSIA's duties is promoting Italian immigration legislations, offering scholarships to Italian-American students and aiding in diplomatic relations between Italy and the United States.
- Unico National (unico.org) was founded in 1922 by a group of Italian-American men -- headed by Dr. Anthony Vastola -- from Waterbury, Connecticut. The purpose of Unico National was for Italian-Americans to contribute to the United States society through civic work and community service. Unico National hosts charity events and programs, offers scholarships for Italian-American students and has approximately 7,000 members in 19 states.
- Founded in 1980, the National Organization of Italian American Women (noiaw.i-italy.org), or NOIAW, represents Italian-American women professionals. Some of NOIAW's founding members included Geraldine Ferraro, a former Congresswoman from New York, and Matilda Cuomo, wife of former New York governor Mario Cuomo. This organization offers scholarships for Italian-American women and hosts annual events to address the culture and concerns of Italian-American women.
- The National Italian American Foundation (niaf.org), or NIAF, is a non-profit, educational organization. Its purpose is promoting Italian-American culture through mentoring and providing scholarships for young Italian-American students. Other duties of NIAF include monitoring the image of Italian-Americans in the media, the promotion of Italian-Americans in the United States government and fostering the placement of Italian culture in the U.S. public school systems. NIAF was founded in 1975.
- Fieri (fieridc.org) is an international organization for young Italian-American students ages 18 through 39. This college-oriented club was founded by two students in 1984, Gina Biancardi of Lehman College and John Calvelli of Fordham University. Fieri was one of the first Italian-American organizations to cater toward younger Italian-Americans. The purpose of Fieri is to preserve the Italian-American culture by offering educational and career opportunities for young Italian-American professionals.
