Record Passenger Numbers Flying From Scottish Airports

With recently published figures indicating that the UK economy slowed from 0.5% growth in the first quarter of 2011, to 0.2% growth in the second quarter, much of the country is struggling to see beyond the economic downturn.

While many areas of industry watch as their customer base and profit margins shrink, an unlikely market seems to be bucking the trend by reporting increased business month on month in 2011.

It's widely accepted that when consumer confidence is hit, luxury purchases and non-essentials such as holidays are among the first things to be sacrificed. Recent figures released by the British Airports Authority (BAA) however show that as far as Scotland is concerned, this is not the case.

Figures to date show that despite the economic slowdown, Scotland's major airports, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow have seen record passenger numbers. The fastest growth was reported by Aberdeen Airport, up 10.1% with Edinburgh Airport up by 7.6% and Glasgow numbers up by 2.6%. June was also a record month for Edinburgh Airport, which has now seen four consecutive months of record traffic. With the peak holiday season fast approaching, this is a trend that the airports, local economies and business hope to see continue.

In addition to the obvious beneficiaries of the increased passenger numbers, namely the airlines, holiday companies and airports, the upturn is also a welcome boost to many of the ancillary holiday services such as airport parking companies, airport hotels and retailers within the terminal buildings.

So what reason could there be for the increase in air traffic through Scottish airports? Well it's probably not down to any one single factor, but with the holiday industry under increased pressure to sell holidays in a tough economic climate, heavy discounting started from very early in the season. This could have resulted in more people than normal taking advantage of an unmissable early holiday bargain.
