So Bored with Winter – Where is Spring? by Donna McKamy

From the Artist: I feel neutral when looking at the picture. No emotions are stirred, so it really evokes "bored with winter ? where is spring".

The painting evolved. I had no idea where it was going. It is the very first "person" I have ever painted. I wanted to achieve a portrait with a lot of color so I was not trying for life-like. It is a good likeness, however. I did it in about four hours and walked away so I would not fuss with it.

I'm pleased with the result.

From the Painting Guide: I think it's a beautiful use of color in an expressive way: the facial structure is realistic so a viewer won't spend time "figuring out" the subject and instead will be lead by the color to interpret the expression and personality of the person represented.

Extrapolating from the title you've given this painting, I think the cool wintry colors you've used are perfect. There's a the feeling of icy cold in the background and cold on your cheeks and hair, the season impacting on you physically. The touch of pink on your face gives a hint of warmth underneath, and the reds of your lips a mask against the cold.

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Composition: Notice how the top of the head goes off the top of the canvas rather than being contained within it. By having the head and shoulders positioned so that you mentally have to complete the image outside the edges of the canvas, you engage the viewer with the portrait more than if you'd given them the full head.

Notice the sense of space surrounding the figure created by having lots of negative space to the left and right. This works because of the shapes and because it's painted in a visually interesting way but doesn't detract from the main focus of the painting, the face.
