Once kids make the connection between toys, ice cream and money, they suddenly become fascinated with those funny pieces of green paper that mom and dad work so hard to collect. This is an excellent time to start teaching kids about money. There are a number of fun money activities you can use to teach children about money at home or in the classroom. - Teach kids about money by developing games that will help them understand the value of money and how it is used to make purchases. To develop your own game use, create images and designs for your game, be it a board game, card game or other game. Add the images you've chosen to your game board and/or cards along with math questions. These questions can be about things like the total price of a grocery list or the taxes that have to be paid. The child wins points each time he correctly answers a question. You might even choose to reward the child when he accumulates enough points with an ice cream or similar small token.
- Create playtime scenarios that use fake money. For example, create a "set" and costumes where kids get a chance to dress up and pretend to be grownups in a store or restaurant. Playacting is a fun activity becomes it seems like real life. Create you own fake money with construction paper, or use money from a board game like Monopoly. Allow children to take turns running a toy cash register. This helps them understand how to make a purchase and pay for something.
- Another fun activity for a child is to allow him to use actual money to purchase a new toy or video game himself. Beyond the normal chores or responsibilities, award children with money for helping around the home or when he gets all As on a report card. Once a child has accumulated enough money, take him out to buy something he really wants. Then let him go the checkout and pay for the item.
