How to Estimate How Long it Takes to Mail a Letter First Class

- 1). Prepare your letter for shipment and take it to the post office. Stand in line at the counter and ask the clerk to mail your letter via First Class. Regular stamps can be purchased ahead of time to mail letters First Class. As of May 2011, a stamp costs $0.44.
- 2). Pay the fee for mailing your letter First Class if you do not have a stamp already on your letter. If your letter weighs more than 1 oz. it must have additional postage, which is calculated by the post office.
- 3). Ask the postal employee to tell you how long the letter will take before it is delivered. The standard amount of time for First Class mail, according to the USPS website is two to three days; however, the postal employee can tell you exactly how long it will take based on the location where you are mailing the letter from and the destination address of the letter.
